Take a Class for Fun - On Your Own or As a Couple

Taking a class about a topic that you enjoy can be an extremely fulfilling and fun experience. Many people have been taking classes for fun over the last decade but more recently, a new social element has developed. Couples have been taking courses for fun about topics that they enjoy together.

Whether on your own or with a partner or spouse, classes are a great way to learn more and encourage great discussions over what you've learned and what you've enjoyed.

Taking a class can give you some great time away from the everyday and as a couple, it gives you an excuse to get out and do something together away from the kids, the mortgage and the rest of your responsibilities.

The class doesn't need to be anything intense such as nuclear physics. It just needs to be something that you like or that you can enjoy with your partner. Look around at colleges and community centers in your area and you're certain to find things that appeal to you both.

Then, it's just a matter of hiring a baby-sitter and heading back to school. Now that you don't "have" to be there, you'll find that it's a lot more fun than you remember from your student days.

There are some great options available in just about any community and among them, at least one is sure to peak your interest. These can include:

- Drawing for the timid and inexperienced

- An introduction to tai chi

- How to wallpaper and paint your walls

- Film appreciation

- Beginning and intermediate fox trot and swing dancing

- Ethnic cooking

- Beginning classes to a new language: French, Italian, Russian, Spanish, German, etc.

- Introduction to photography

- Fitness fun

- Gardening

You may even choose to take some more "practical" courses to help you in your career or in other areas of your life. These may include:

- Preparing your tax returns

- Keyboarding

- Basic computer skills

- Public speaking - learning how, and overcoming anxiety

- Basic investing

These options only touch on the surface of all of the classes that are likely available to you in your area. These and many like them are frequently offered to you at little or no cost at all.

Even if you live in a small town, there are certain to be classes offered at nearby towns and communities. Places that you can try looking include:

- Community colleges

- School districts

- Community centers

- Colleges and universities

- Craft stores and do-it-yourself stores

- Churches

- Art museums and galleries

- Gardening groups and botanical gardens

- Fitness centers

- Historical centers and societies

The best time to take a course for fun is the winter, that is, the third quarter of the community college offerings. This is because there are fewer good-weather excuses to pull you away from your classes. This always works best for people looking to simply enjoy a class.

Testimonials

"My degree from Almeda has opened up a door with a large corporation that I began with in 1982. After transferring to a buyout company in 1985 and working with them for 10 years, the following 10 years were spent with countless resumes and rejections of "adequate experience" but no "formal piece of paper."

It was actually the wallet-sized laminated copy of my degree (Almeda included with my actual certificate) that I offered to Human Resources during my recent interview that eliminated any long wait for a formal educational background check and secured an offer during that same meeting! Countless reams of resume paper, printer ink refills, and the stress of rejections were all left behind with just one, on the spot, wallet-sized proof positive during an interview.

(I have since thrown away my 3 ring binder collection of rejection letters!)"
